It is tempting to be everywhere: Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, Google Ads, WhatsApp broadcasts, hoardings. But every channel you open is a promise that someone will keep it accurate and respond.

Here is how to choose a mix that patients can rely on.

Start from the patient, not the platform

Ask three questions for each channel:

  1. Do patients use it when they need us? Someone looking for an OPD timing uses Google and your website, not a reel.
  2. Can our team respond there quickly? A WhatsApp number nobody monitors on Sunday does more harm than good.
  3. Is it appropriate for healthcare? Some formats and claims are restricted; everything should be reviewed.

The core channels (get these right first)

  • Google Business Profile: accurate details for each branch.
  • Website: clear services, doctors, timings and booking.
  • Phone: answered, with a sensible call flow.
  • WhatsApp Business: for appointment questions, with named owners and clear hours.

These four handle most patient needs. If any of them is weak, fix it before adding anything else.

Tip: Test your own channels like a patient. Call on a Saturday evening, send a WhatsApp message at 9 pm, search for a department on Google. Note what happens.

Supporting channels (add with a purpose)

  • Social media: useful for community information, health-awareness days reviewed by doctors, and showing your facilities. Not for clinical promises or before-and-after images.
  • YouTube: doctor-led explainers work well if they are reviewed and kept general.
  • Paid search ads: can help for specific services, but only when the landing page and booking process are ready.
  • Print and outdoor: still useful locally—just make sure the details match everything online.

Permission and privacy rules to respect

  • Send promotional messages only to people who have agreed to receive them.
  • Give an easy way to opt out, and honour it.
  • Never share patient details in public replies or group messages.
  • Keep a human available when automated messages are used—WhatsApp’s business policy expects clear escalation to a person.

A simple channel plan

For each channel, write down: its purpose, who owns it, response hours, what can be posted, who approves it, and how you will know it is working. If you cannot fill in the owner, do not open the channel yet.

Channel checklist

  • Core four channels accurate and staffed.
  • Each channel has a purpose and a named owner.
  • Response hours stated publicly.
  • Promotional messages only with consent, with an opt-out.
  • Content reviewed before posting.
  • A monthly check that details match everywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Which marketing channels matter most for a hospital?

An accurate Google Business Profile, a clear website, an answered phone line and a well-run WhatsApp Business number. Social media and ads help only once these work.

Can hospitals send WhatsApp promotional messages?

Only to people who have opted in, with a clear way to opt out, and with a human available to respond. Never include patient details in broadcasts.

Should a hospital be on every social media platform?

No. Open a channel only if patients use it for your services and your team can keep it accurate and respond. An unmanaged channel damages trust.
